Fall Saturdays in Columbus hit different. The air gets that crisp edge, the leaves start changing, and suddenly every coffee shop in the city is packed with people pretending to work on their laptops.
After living here for years, I’ve nailed down the perfect relaxed-yet-put-together outfit for these days. Welcome to post #9 on The Better Dressed Budget: My Columbus Coffee Shop Outfit Formula for Fall Saturdays.
I’m Tyler Brooks, J.Crew Factory floor lead, and this is the exact formula I wear when I head out for coffee with Maddie, meet friends, or just want to feel like a functioning adult on my day off.
The Columbus Fall Coffee Shop Formula
Jeans + Good Tee + Flannel Layer + Outer Jacket + Easy Shoes
This combination handles Ohio’s unpredictable fall weather perfectly — cool in the morning, warm in the sun, and comfortable for sitting for hours.
Core Pieces Breakdown
1. Bottoms: Dark or Medium Wash Jeans
Go with straight or athletic fit (see post #6 if you need a refresher). Levi’s or J.Crew Factory on sale.
Dark wash hides any accidental coffee spills better. Avoid light wash for fall — it feels too summery.
2. Base Layer: Heather Gray or White Heavyweight Tee
Uniqlo Supima or J.Crew Factory. Something with real weight so it doesn’t look cheap under the flannel.
3. Star of the Show: Forest Green or Charcoal Flannel
This is the hero piece. Old Navy, Gap, or J.Crew Factory flannel (usually under $30 on sale).
Wear it open and unbuttoned for that effortless look. Roll the sleeves once or twice.
4. Outer Layer: Denim Jacket or Olive Chore Coat
Denim jacket for a classic American vibe
Olive chore coat for something a bit more interesting and practical
Both work great over the flannel.
5. Shoes: Brown Suede Chukkas or Clean White Sneakers
Brown chukkas when it’s drier and I want to look a little sharper
White sneakers when I’m feeling more casual or know I’ll be walking a lot
Bonus Accessories:
Simple watch
Wool or knit beanie if it’s really cold
Reusable coffee tumbler (because Columbus coffee shops love loyalty)
Three Variations I Actually Wear

Version A – Classic & Safe
Dark jeans + Gray tee + Forest green flannel (open) + Denim jacket + Brown chukkas
Version B – Slightly Dressier
Olive chinos + White tee + Charcoal flannel + Navy quarter-zip + Brown boots
Version C – Super Relaxed
Medium jeans + Navy tee + Olive chore coat + White sneakers
All three take under 5 minutes to put together but consistently get compliments.
Why This Formula Works So Well in Columbus
Handles temperature swings (40°F mornings to 65°F afternoons)
Looks intentional but not overdressed for a casual coffee shop
Comfortable for sitting, walking, and spontaneous bookstore stops
Easy to adjust if Maddie wants to extend the day into dinner
My “Do Not Buy Again” Fall Coffee Mistakes
Wore a heavy hoodie and felt like I was suffocating inside the warm shop
Chose fashion sneakers that got destroyed by wet leaves and rain
Wore a flannel that was too thin and ended up cold on the walk home
Overlayered and looked like a walking laundry pile
Packing / Planning Tip
When Maddie and I plan a full Saturday (coffee → walk → maybe lunch), I use this formula as my base and throw a light packable layer in my bag just in case.
Your Weekend Action Step
This coming Saturday, build this outfit from what you already own. Take a quick mirror photo. Then go sit in your favorite local coffee shop for an hour and notice how the outfit makes you feel.
Comfortable clothes that still look good = confident mornings.
Fall in Ohio is too short and beautiful to waste it wearing boring or uncomfortable clothes. This formula lets you enjoy the season while still looking like you have your life together.
Spend less. Dress better. And go enjoy that pumpkin spice latte… or whatever you’re into.
See you next week.
